The "Top Hat" was invented by John Hetherington, a haberdasher in London in the late 18th century. He decided to wear it in the streets but got arrested for breaching the peace and incitement to riot. It was said that, "women fainted at the sight of it, children screamed, dogs yelped and a young boy suffered a broken arm in the ensuing scrum". He was fined £500 but it did eventually catch on when Prince Albert started to wear one 50 years later.
